For many centuries sculpture was generally carved stone or cast metal. Since the surrealists, artists increasingly chose the actual substance of a sculpture for its meaning, connotations, or physical charge and presence. A pioneer of earthworks and public art, Nancy Holt also worked in sculpture, installation, film, video, and photography for over three decades. She is best known for her large-scale environmental sculptural works, including Sun Tunnels in Utah and Dark Star Park in Virginia. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Holt made a series of pioneering film and video works, including several After studying biology at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, Nancy Holt moved to New York. In 1963 she married Robert Smithson, with whom she collaborated on several occasions.

From 1973 until 2014 she cared for the Estate of Robert Smithson, whom she married in 1963. In 2014 Nancy Holt willed Holt/Smithson Foundation into being.
